What is the difference between Affect and Effect?

The simplest answer is that “Affect” is a verb while “Effect” is a noun, so you need to use them accordingly. Here are their meaning according to Longman online dictionary:

Affect: verb [transitive]

To do something that produces an effect or change in something or in someone’s situation.

  • the areas affected by the hurricane
  • a disease that affects the central nervous system

 

Effect: noun [countable, uncountable]

A change that is caused by an event, action, etc.

  • the harmful effects of modern farming practices
  • the long-term effects of the drug  
  • I could feel the effects of the thin mountain air.
